Allen Salter is a native of Upson County and graduated from Upson County High School in 1983. He left Upson in 1984 for the United States Air Force. That same year he married Lisa Jo (Bell) Salter of Upson. Allen served for nearly 12 years in the Air Force before separating honorably in 1995. At the time of separation, Allen was serving as an Air Force recruiter in Oxford, Mississippi.
In early 1996, Allen enrolled at The University of Mississippi “Ole Miss”. He completed both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in accountancy in 1998 and was offered a position with PricewaterhouseCoopers, one of the nation’s top 4 accounting firms, otherwise known as the “Big .” In 2021, Allen completed the requirements for licensure as a Certified Public Accountant for the State of Georgia. Allen continues to keep his license current.
Over his private sector career of nearly 20 years, Allen focused on financial institutions and real estate development and management companies delivering auditing and consulting services and working for three separate banking institutions in roles from accounting manager to Chief Financial Officer. For the past four years, he has focused his attention on governmental finance and accounting. His prior experiences in the private sector, particularly with internal controls and financial reporting translates well to the governmental sector.
Allen returned home to Upson County in 2017 so that he and his wife could be near their parents. Allen took a position as an accounting manager for the Upson County Board of Commissioners that year. He worked in this position for approximately two years before taking the position of Assistant Vice President and Controller for Fort Valley State University. There he worked for 18 months before returning to the County as the Director of Finance and Special Projects in early 2021.
